Cal State LA is ranked number one in the West in the “America’s Best Bang for the Buck Colleges” category by Washington Monthly.

This ranking, which was released Monday in the magazine’s 2023 College Guide and Rankings, includes colleges and universities that offer students the opportunity to obtain marketable degrees at affordable prices.

“Cal State LA provides students with an opportunity to receive an excellent education regardless of their family’s income,” said Leroy M. Morishita, interim president of Cal State LA. “I am pleased to see our university recognized for our success in serving all students.”

Washington Monthly also ranks Cal State LA at number two in the “Best Master’s Universities” category. The University moved up another spot from last year.

This ranking is based on universities and colleges’ contribution to the public good, considering factors that include social mobility, research, and promoting public service.

Cal State LA is the premier comprehensive public university in the heart of Los Angeles. The University, which recently celebrated its 75th anniversary, serves more than 26,000 students and has more than 250,000 distinguished alumni.

This year’s Economic Mobility Index report, recently released by the think tank Third Way, puts Cal State LA in the top tier of universities in the nation for providing the most economic mobility and the best return on investment. The study rates the nation’s four-year colleges based on calculations that consider the proportion of students receiving Pell grants, the cost of attendance, and students’ expected earnings after graduation.

The opportunity to engage in research at the undergraduate level is a longstanding tradition at Cal State LA and is part of the student experience. The Minority Opportunities in Research (MORE) programs enhance the development of minority students who wish to pursue research careers in the natural science disciplines, mathematics, and engineering through intensive student development and research opportunities. The university is a leader in graduating students of color who go on to earn a Ph.D. in STEM fields.

Cal State LA is committed to engagement, service, and the public good. The university’s commitment to uplifting and transforming the economies and social well-being of communities across the region led to an anchor institution designation by the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities. The University is a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution, Minority-Serving Institution, and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution.

Cal State LA is currently leading a regional consortium of colleges and universities participating in the #CaliforniansForAll College Corps program. The consortium offers meaningful civic and community engagement opportunities to at least 200 low-to-moderate income students, helping to reduce their college debt through financial support while addressing key challenges facing some of the most underserved communities in the eastern region of Los Angeles County.
